From Odeon to Odyssey

Some footage I took at the National Heritage Open Day at the former Odeon Cinema, St Albans, where its new, post-restoration, name was unveiled: The Odyssey (a name partially in honour of the late Stanley Kubrick, who lived in nearby Childwickbury).

The people of St Albans raised £1m in just 8 weeks to enable James Hannaway to secure the site, saving it from being turned into flats with underground parking. The plan is to reopen in 2012.

The original cinema on this site, The Alpha, was certainly one of the first and may have been the very first purpose-built cinema in the UK, with a raked floor, comfy tip-up seats and a separate projectionist booth.

Got a bit carried away with the vintage film stock look, but it compensates a bit for a rather challenging lighting conditions and gave an excuse for a gratuitous fancy swipe at the name announcement.
